I have been married (to the same wife) for 23 years, with whom we have two boys, both in college now. Neither rich nor poor, we are not too attached to material goods, but enjoy the house we built 14 miles outside of Guatemala City. Due to my involvement with the appropriate technology/ecology movements I have travelled extensively in Americas, Europe, Asia and once in Africa. My love of the far east has made me be interested in studying chinese, japanese and korean, of which I understand only written and with a lot of help from dictionaries.

Edgardo has shared his life’s exploits. They follow:

I’ll summarize my main exploits. After PBHS, I graduated as a teacher of primary education in Nicaragua; studied math & science in del Valle & Pomona College, linguistics at Yale University, and Medicine in San Carlos University. Those are the four main fields at which I have worked professionaly:

* teaching [primary (4th & 6th grades); secondary (math, science, chemistry, english & spanish, music, art); university (biology, alternative medicine)].
* linguistics [aside from teaching english and spanish, translating technical books into english and spanish, translating rural development material from chinese into spanish, publishing a newsletter in spanish/english/french, publishing a small introductory text into mayan epigraphy, presently working at a mayan roots dictionary].
* mathematical analysis [statistical (mainly design, digitation and analysis of surveys of different appropriate technologies) and financial (mostly linked to cost/benefit of appropriate technologies and profitability of small enterprises)].
* medicine and surgery [I specialize in naturopathic medicine and acupuncture, with a lot of hours into medicinal plants, massage, taiji quan & yoga, nutrition, minor surgery, holistic psychotherapy].

Those past activities have given me the cash earnings to pursue my other more delightful occupations:

* music [I started guitar while in PBHS, without a teacher, entirely from books; later I met musicians who were willing to play tunes with me, reading from books; 8 years ago I started playing keyboard and playing with professionals at a private setting; I enjoy music interpretation and arranging inmensely, but I’m nowhere near being a competent musician].
* game of go [this is the oldest game in the world, yet the only board game where humans are not defeated by computers; I’ve been involved with the popularization of this game in Guatemala, with very poor results, but still deeply enthusiastic on the game and its enormous potential, since it has been used to fight against both autism and Alzheimer’s].
* drawing and sculpting [I do portraits and caricatures with fountain pen, and enjoy sculpting wood & bamboo, chinese calligraphy and mayan art].
* reading [I read a lot of non-fiction in science (astronomy, physics, health, ecology), philosophy (east asian, comparative religions, political economy) and anthropology/archeology].
